An Open Letter from William F.J. Hood, Q.C., Managing Partner

To prospective associates or law students, my name is Bill Hood, managing partner at Stevenson Hood Thornton Beaubier LLP and it is my pleasure to introduce myself to you. I would like to tell you a bit about us and invite you to apply for an associate, articling, or summer student position.

Ken Stevenson was a founding partner of our firm, which was established in 1973.  I joined the partnership in 1975 and was followed by Bob Thornton in 1978. Beaty Beaubier joined us as an associate in 1985 and became a partner in 1991.  The firm was known as Priel Stevenson Hood and Thornton until 2004, when it became Stevenson Hood Thornton Beaubier LLP. I am extremely proud of my partners, present and past, and could not be happier in my present partnership relationship.

Presently we are a full-service firm with a team of 18 lawyers. Historically we have been known for our strengths in corporate law and corporate litigation. Over the years this has evolved and we are now recognized for, among other things, our tax practice. In my view, it is our strongest attribute and the glue needed to hold a good commercial firm together.

A business person in my own right, I can honestly say that were I ever to need legal advice on commercial matters I would use our firm, and that serves as testament to the skill and experience of our team. Am I tooting my own horn? Perhaps, but only because I can also point to our many long-term clients, some of whom we have known for decades. Many of these clients are distinguished members of the local business community who trust us to best serve the needs of both their organizations and their families.

While it may seem like a cliché, our strength really is in our people. We pride ourselves on collegial relationships and our long history of working together. We respect each other and enjoy working together, which is why many of our legal assistants have been with us throughout the entire history of the firm. We enjoy our work, and we work very hard, but we are also family focused. We encourage our lawyers and students to contribute to the community and become involved in whichever volunteer activities they see fit, albeit this is not a requirement of working at our firm.

Our firm is still growing and we are always interested in meeting talented, energetic and hardworking individuals who, most importantly, will fit in with our culture. While many of our lawyers and students have outstanding academic records, and that has been important to us, what is more significant from our perspective is a lawyer’s ability to work as part of our team. We like to think of ourselves as big enough to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive experience but small enough so that the door is always open to talk with any member of our firm.

If you feel that Stevenson Hood Thornton Beaubier LLP might be the right place for you, please feel free to contact us or complete the online application on this website. Thank you and we look forward to meeting you.

Yours truly,

William F. J. Hood, Q.C.
